Commenting on the Scottish First Minister’s announcement of preparations for a second Scottish independence referendum, European Green Party Co-Chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:
“Just shortly before British Prime Minister May will trigger Brexit negotiations with the European Union, Scottish First Minister Nicola Sturgeon has upped the ante. Whether Downing Street n.10 will de facto be negotiating the dissolution of two Unions at the same time, England’s union with Scotland and England’s Union with the EU, this has been put into the hands of Mrs May.
"If she insists on a hard Brexit while refusing any accommodation for Scotland’s wish to stay in the EU, she might go down in history as the British Prime Minister who lost two Unions because of one single falling.
"European Greens would prefer that Britain stay in the EU. We would also prefer if Scotland didn’t have to call an independence referendum to fulfil the political will of the clear majority of Scots to remain a fully integrated member of the European family of nations.
"We are convinced that it would be possible to accommodate the Scottish wishes even under Brexit conditions. But Mrs May cannot have the Scottish cake and eat it too."
