Brussels, 3 May 2017
PRESS RELEASE
As the European Council and the European Commission have laid down the guidelines for the Brexit negotiation with the United Kingdom, European Green Party Co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said:
“While Brexit talks are being prepared, we insist on reminding both sides that the results of these negotiations should be put to a referendum in the UK. British citizens must not be denied the right to 'take back control' over this momentous decision, after they have been able to assess what it really could cost them.
"European Greens welcome the proposal by the Green Party of England and Wales to set up a British ratification referendum.
"Whoever will win the snap elections in the UK, will then have a mandate to negotiate on behalf of the British people, but not to impose a final deal. Brits must be given the opportunity to tell their government that, in the light of the eventual negotiation outcome, they come to the conclusion they may be better off remaining a full member of the EU."
