Short title:
European Parliament votes to support anti-homophobia roadmap

The European Parliament has voted in favour of a report that calls for an EU roadmap against homophobia, and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. The report was drafted by Ulrike Lunacek MEP, who is the co-president of the Intergroup on LGBT Rights in the EP.

The European Green Party (EGP) expresses its strongest possible support for the organisers and participants in Belgrade Pride 2013, which had been due to take place on Saturday September 28. We stand in solidarity with Serbia's LGBT community.

“The vote in the House of Commons for gay marriage marks a historic moment in the progress of equality in Britain,” said Natalie Bennett, leader of the Green Party of England and Wales. “With the large Commons majority of 225, the elected representatives have spoken and the House of Lords has no grounds for resistance.  Britain has joined other progressive states, including Sweden, Denmark, Canada and Belgium, in giving gay couples an equal right to marry as that enjoyed by heterosexual couples.”

The Serbian authorities have shown their lack of understanding of the importance of this event for people all around Europe. It could have been a sign of hope for the LGTBQ community in Serbia, and throughout the Balkan region. The Serbian authorities failed to provide even this hope.

Dutch GroenLinks MEP Marije Cornelissen has sent a video report from this year's highly successful and festive Split LGBT Pride March. She was in the Croatian city again to participate in the parade and to monitor the situation after last year's event was marred by serious violence from the far right.

May 17 is the International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, and this year the EGP is coming together with the Federation of Young European Greens to remind gay, bisexual and transgendered people across Europe that the EU, European Greens and the Young Greens are behind them in the fight against prejudice and exclusion.
