Human Rights & Migration

Human rights are core to our European values – and the ultimate yardstick for minority protection and migration policies.

Europe is a project of peace, of overcoming borders and of bringing people together. We Greens celebrate this diversity and want to make Europe a safe place for everyone . Human dignity, equality, and solidarity are core European values and form the cornerstones of the European Project. We believe in a fair and just society where everyone is treated equally and enjoys the same rights, regardless of their gender, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation.

We reject any undermining of any liberty or fundamental rights that we see arise from the current nationalistic, xenophobic and reactionary movements that are threatening the open and democratic quality of our society.

We Greens are uncompromising on defending the rights of asylum seekers and migrants; we believe that the EU has a role to play in this respect, in terms of defining common policies and helping their implementation. We advocate for a full use of the existing legal instruments to ensure safe and legal access; for a more ambitious resettlement and relocation scheme; for support mechanisms and funds for countries, cities and communities that accept to relocate refugees, as well as encouraging the others to reconsider their decision not to participate; for a focus on addressing the root causes of migration by changing trade and development policies that finance authoritarian regimes.

Our thoughts are with #GiorgosKaraivaz's family and colleagues today following his brutal murder. We also call on Greek police to conduct a thorough investigation into his killing, another tragedy in a growing series of crimes targeting European journalists and #FreedomOfPress. https://t.co/3L8bYcgwei
