Resolution adopted at the EGP Council, Berlin, 16-18 March 2007 (.pdf)
The Mayor of Moscow Yuri Luzhkov that illegally banned the demonstration for the rights of the LGBT, has once again spoken against the Moscow gay pride that is to take place this year.
On January 29th at an orthodox conference in Kremlin he has called the demonstration “a satanic act” and has vowed not to allow it to happen.
The Russian legislation doesn't allow for preventive ban of peaceful demonstration. The statements of the mayor are only provocative and homophobic. His determination to ban the demonstration for the rights of the LGBT is in violation with the fundamental right to freedom of assembly.
We condemn the homophobic statements by the Moscow Mayor Yuri Luzhkov.
We also strongly condemn the systematic violations of freedom of assembly in Moscow, especially those that are directly supported by the city's highest official.
