The agreement reached by Prime Minister Zoran Zaev and his Greek counterpart Alexis Tsipras is a chance to end the decades-long dispute between Skopje and Athens.
It should also help in the process of speeding up the Republic of Northern Macedonia's accession to the EU.
Responding to the news, European Green Party co-chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:
“This is a major victory for European unity and puts an end to a decades-long dispute between Athens and Skopje.
“It also serves as an inspiration for Europe that it is capable of finding workable solutions to seemingly intractable problems.
“Instead of battling over a name, the countries can now finally bury the hatchet and switch their focus towards improving the lives of local communities, which this sense of permanence and legitimacy will now provide.
“We are still painfully aware of the dire consequences that can result from neglect in this region. It is in the EU’s interests to bring it firmly within its orbit by opening the accession negotiations for the Republic of Northern Macedonia and encouraging the Western Balkans countries to work towards adhering to the Copenhagen criteria.
“We congratulate negotiating parties in both countries for having the tenacity and political will to find a workable compromise and urge the EU to fully recognise this historic achievement.”
