"Commenting on the decision announced by US President Donald Trump to withdraw from the landmark Paris Climate Agreement, European Green Party co-chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:
"The most drastic consequence of President Trump's decision will be seen on the international role of the US itself. If President Obama had shown international leadership through his active, driving role in the success of the 2015 Paris Climate Summit, Donald Trump now squanders that capital.
"Though this decision represents a serious wound in the fight against climate change, it will not be a fatal one. The federal government is indeed not the only level where climate policy is decided in the US. We are confident that this move will motivate states, cities and businesses to step up and multiply their efforts and we look forward to working with the US Climate Alliance of the States of California, New York, Washington and many others.
"This step back from the US federal government must be a key occasion for the EU to take a step forward instead, get out of its divisions and lead the fight against climate change. Europe must unite the forces of its member states internationally - together we have more creative power than we believe."
