Resolution accepted at the 12th EGP Council, Barcelona, Spain, March 19-21, 2010
Poland has a huge potential for improving energy efficiency at all levels - its production, distribution and consumption - being one of the least energy efficient EU member state. This situation results among others in roughly one million Polish families living at the energy poverty level.
European Greens are alarmed about the current situation in Poland where the government announced two proposals of optional sites for the first nuclear power station (3000 MW) in the history of the country to be build by 2020. This official proposal has been announced without any public debate about alternative scenarios so far. Poland has a huge potential for improving energy efficiency at all levels - its production, distribution and consumption - being one of the least energy efficient EU member state. This situation results among others in roughly one million Polish families living at the energy poverty level.
Proposal of the Polish Government to build an expensive nuclear plant threatens financing Poland’s energy efficiency and energy saving programs, which would be more profitable for all: society, economy and the environment. On the other hand, Poland within climate-energy package needs to meet a goal of 15% of renewable energy by2020 which could not be achieved with most resources being used for the construction of a nuclear power plant(s). Nor very urgent modernization of the country’s energetic network would also be possible.
European Greens call for a genuine democratic debate and protest against onesided propaganda financed by Poland’s taxpayers’ money.
