Commenting on the news that migrants’ lives are being used by national governments in Italy and Germany to broker deals on migration, European Green Party co-chair Monica Frassoni said:
“It is sad to see that the lives of migrants who have endured terrible trials and tribulations are being made into bargaining chips in the board rooms of national governments.
“Both Salvini and Seehofer are playing a petty game of one-upmanship that cannot yield any substantial results. Salvini says he is prepared to shut down Italy’s airports to prevent Germany from sending back migrants to the country where they first applied for asylum, whilst Seehofer perseveres with a blind and unthinking observance of the Dublin rules without any consideration of the individuals involved.
“The core issue is the reform of the Dublin regulation as part of a negotiated and European solution that includes legally established channels of migration, better resources to manage integration policies and unforeseen emergencies, as well as a fairer sharing of the responsibility among member countries. If governments continue to pursue a national interests first approach, all Europeans are set to lose out.”
