On 5 June 2022, member parties of the European Green Party unanimously welcomed Hållbart Initiativ from Åland (Finland) as a new member of the European Greens family.
Thomas Waitz and Mélanie Vogel, co-chairs of the European Green Party, comment:
“Congratulations to Hållbart Initiativ! The European Green Party is proud to welcome you in the European Greens family. Our political family seeks to be truly inclusive, including geographically.
We are ready to mobilise the energy and expertise of the European Green Party and of our members to support you in engaging Åland in a just and fair ecological transition.
Islands could have an important role in the energy transition through, for instance, the potential of developing large scale offshore wind power. Åland needs and deserves a sustainable alternative that will help implement policies for a just transition. We are truly convinced that Hållbart Initiativ will deliver these policies!”
Alfons Röblom and Erica Scott, co-chairs of Hållbart Initiativ, add:
“We are delighted to be joining the European Green Party. We are building a true alternative for a greener and fairer future in Åland, the support of the European Greens family is invaluable to strengthen our position.
Åland, our big little autonomous group of islands, deserves a rapid sustainable transition. Our presence in the government and in the parliament has allowed us to bring forward effective solutions to advance the fight against climate change and social justice at the same time. Our new connection with the European Greens and its member parties will surely help us to develop further, and source effective solutions from across Europe, but also it will allow us to contribute with our unique perspective and expertise.
