Commenting after this weekend’s elections in the German state of Hesse, the European Green Party co-chairs Reinhard Bütikofer and Monica Frassoni said:
“The Green Wave rolls on in the latest Länder election in Germany. Greens posted a result of 19.8 % of the vote after they had scored 11.1 % five years ago. CDU and SPD, who governed together in Chancellor Merkel’s government both lost more than 10 %. Greens even managed to extremely narrowly beat the social democrats for second place.
“One of the most astonishing results of post-election polling signaled that Greens earned more trust in being able to deal with the issues that shape our future than all political competitors. 75 % of all respondents also said they would like to see Greens to continue in the Hesse state government. One of the identifiable factors that played both against CDU and SPD and in favour of Greens has been the diesel scandal. 80% of people polled believe that the German Federal government has been caving just too much to privileged corporate interests. The diesel scandal was mentioned explicitly as a major reason for voting Green.”
