Leaders of Green Parties from all over Europe have just concluded their first Green Leadership Council in Brussels, where they met to launch their preparations for the 2024 European Parliament election campaign.
Co-chairs Mélanie Vogel and Thomas Waitz comment:
“The Green Leadership Council has concluded with a common vision towards the 2024 EU elections, with Greens ready to face one of the most turbulent moments in recent history - from the war in Ukraine and the ongoing climate crisis, to the increased cost of living and social inequalities.
“We are ready to build radical change everywhere and to take responsibility and be at the heart of new majorities at the EU level that fight for climate ambition, social justice, fundamental rights, and democracy, while clearly refusing to cooperate with the far-right.
“The Spitzenkandidaten process is the strongest democratic tool at our disposal to give EU citizens a direct say in deciding who would be the next European Commission President. That is why we support the process, and will put forward a proposal to the Green family to elect co-leading candidates (a Doppelspitze)* for the 2024 EU elections. We call on the other European political parties to live up to their democratic responsibilities by also prioritizing transparency and the democratic legitimacy of the EU and nominating their own Spitzenkandidaten. Backdoor horse-trading between the member states in the European Council for the EU’s top job can no longer be tolerated.”
* Historically, the European Greens have selected two leading candidates (a Doppelspitze) to ensure gender-balance.
