Resolution accepted at the EGP Council meeting, Malmö, Sweden, October 16-18, 2009

Renewable sources are the only viable sources of sustainable energy,

Recognizing

- that mitigation of climate change implies the reduction of greenhouse gases in Europe in the order of 90% by 2050,

- that the energy sector is one of the main sources of greenhouse gases in Europe,

- the need to reduce the import of energy to Europe in order to increase energy security

Emphasizing

- that renewable sources are the only viable sources of sustainable energy,

- that the economic potential for renewable energy in Europe greatly exceeds the expected use of electricity in 2050,

- that currently only 11% of this potential is being used,

- that there are great differences in the potential for renewable energy on the national level,

- that enhanced cooperation on the development and deployment of renewable energy and energy systems in Europe is crucial to an enhanced production and use of renewable energy,

- that vast investments are needed to realize the potential, - that the current framework for energy policies in Europe is an obstacle for increased cooperation in this field,

- that the existing community for cooperation on energy, the Euratom, is unsustainable and obsolete,

The European Green Party concludes that

- a European Community for Renewable Energy is essential to increase cooperation with the objective to realize the potential for green energy in Europe,

Therefore, the European Green Party calls on its Member Parties, Members of Parliaments, local and regional deputies, Members of the European Parliament to:

- take initiatives and act in favor of measures to develop and implement the proposed European Community for Renewable Energy, ERENE, at all relevant levels.

Together, Russia and Ukraine exported more than a quarter of the world's wheat before the war. Now, the war is impacting food security across the globe. As Greens, we believe that food should never be used as a geopolitical weapon – and we should never be in the position for it to be used against us.
