Members of the European Parliament are discussing triggering disciplinary action against Hungary today for breaching European values based on a report by Greens/EFA MEP Judith Sargentini.
Commenting ahead of the debate, European Green Party co-chairs Monica Frassoni and Reinhard Bütikofer said:
“We urge all Members of the European Parliament to vote in favour of the Article 7 procedure against Hungary on Wednesday 12 September, regardless of political affiliations.
“The report by Greens/EFA MEP Judith Sargentini clearly shows that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán is flouting the EU’s basic rights and values in an attempt to delegitismise its authority whilst cashing in on generous development funds.
“The EU now has the opportunity to take firm action to reinstate the values of human dignity, freedom, democracy, equality, the rule of law and human rights - including the rights of minorities.
“This is a vote that transcends party politics. We must be steadfast in defending the EU's fundamental values and refuse to compromise.”
