Bucha: War crimes in Ukraine must stop

PRESS RELEASE

Brussels
04 April 2022

We strongly condemn the brutal massacre that has unfolded in Bucha on the civilian population, including women, children and the elderly, which was under a month-long Russian military occupation until a few days ago.

We also condemn the massacre and rape of innocent civilians in other previously occupied regions of Kyiv, as horrific reports unfold of bodies found bound ‘execution style’ and of women assaulted by Russian military.

We are also increasingly concerned by reports of Russia targeting civilians in their operations, including bombing healthcare facilities like maternity wards and hospitals, leading to a health crisis in Ukraine as Putin also prevents food and medicines from entering certain territories.

Today, in the 21st century, we are witnessing a genocide on European soil. The extermination of the people of Ukraine and their heritage is an attempt at eliminating a nation, culture and peoples which fought for sovereignty and democracy.

This senseless violence reveals impunity of the Russian forces on everyday people and the lawlessness which reigns under their occupation.

Moscow’s flagrant denial of the killings of innocent civilians in occupied regions is shocking. These scenes of devastation cannot go unpunished. As the European Greens, we stand with the people of Ukraine and express our deep sorrow at how these cruel acts of destruction are impacting communities across Ukraine.

Europe must remain united in our efforts to support Ukrainians defending its territories and peoples against Russian aggression.

Beyond borders, everyday people also have the power to act in solidarity with the people of Ukraine and call out these atrocities.

As the European Greens, we therefore call for:

  • The International Criminal Court to immediately begin war crime investigations

  • Tighter EU sanctions on Russia

  • An EU and global ban on oil exports from Russia

  • Additional support to the people of Ukraine as they face a humanitarian crisis

  • The people of Russia and the world to stand up against their government and call out the government’s sponsoring of the killings of innocent people
