British Prime Minister Theresa May has put forward her so-called Plan B following the Commons defeat of her Brexit plan.
During her statement, May refused to rule out leaving the EU in a ‘no-deal’ scenario as well as a ‘people’s vote’. She also refused to extend Article 50.
Commenting on the statement, the co-chair of the European Green Party Monica Frassoni said:
“Another week has passed by without any progress on Brexit. It is wildly delusional to suggest the only deal on the table is the withdrawal agreement, which was massively rejected by the House of Commons. It can now only lead to a dead-end.
“Surely it’s time to come clean with the British public and admit we’re reached the end of the road. The only realistic option would now be to seek an extension of Article 50 and put the vote back to the people. The EU has always been unanimous in expressing its regret over Brexit. However, there’s a danger that goodwill could evaporate if the UK continues to play games over its future relations with the EU.
“Our number one priority must now be to provide clarity and we urge the British to move quickly in the interests of all citizens involved in this messy divorce. The EU should only consider extending the Article 50 deadline in the case of a clear roadmap or a guarantee for a second referendum.”
