Brussels
1st October 2020

On 30 September 2020, Belgian political parties found an agreement and formed a seven-party governing coalition, dubbed the ‘Vivaldi Government’. The Belgian Green Parties, Ecolo and Groen, have joined the coalition thus making Belgium the sixth EU member state with Greens in government.

Evelyne Huytebroeck, co-chair of the European Green Party comments:

“After recent electoral Green Waves in France and Germany, we are excited to see another Green party joining a government. As Greens, we have developed proposals and solutions for a recovery from the Covid-19 crisis that fully engages our societies on the path towards sustainability, fairness and equality. It is now time for us to prove these solutions work! Citizens across Europe are increasingly giving us their trust. Being in national governments is a privilege that comes with responsibilities and a duty to act swiftly and decisively.

As European Greens, we will continue strengthening the cooperation between our parties in government to help them deliver results towards a green transformation of Europe that benefits all and leaves no one behind.”

Petra De Sutter (Groen) and Georges Gilkinet (Ecolo), newly appointed Deputy Prime Ministers add:

“The responsibility on our shoulders is huge but we are ready to assume it. Holding the climate, environment, sustainable development, energy, mobility and gender equality portfolios gives us the opportunity to rapidly engage Belgium in the necessary energy transition and to take bold steps in the fight against climate change.

We will also be able to strongly support the efforts towards a sustainable recovery from the COVID-19 crisis. Families, workers and businesses have suffered tremendously and our economy, like many others in Europe, has been severely affected. We are ready to do what it takes. We truly believe that the path towards recovery must be walked in parallel to the path towards a sustainable, fair and just society. Ecolo and Groen will fight to show that these are not only words, but actions and solutions.”

END

The full government coalition programme can be found here in French and in Dutch.
