Resolution accepted at the 9th EGP Council meeting, Montreuil, Paris, France, October 9-12, 2008
The European Green Party gathered in Paris supports the recommendations of the Jean Lambert report, in particular the concept of responsibility sharing by the 27 countries of the EU and a revision of the Dublin Convention to ensure that Malta and its people do not continue carrying the disproportionate weight they are carrying at the moment in the examination of applications of asylum seekers.
Considering
Asylum seekers
- that Tuesday, September 2, 2008, the European Parliament approved Green MEP Jean Lambert report on asylum seekers and thre Dublin regulations by 603 votes in favour, 53 against and 30 abstentions.
- that through this vote, the European Parliament has called on the Commission to come up with ways to help smaller member states like Malta on the periphery of the EU to cope with the adverse affects of regulations on asylum seekers.
- that the European Commission is considering European burden-sharing mechanisms, but the Parliament insisted that non-financial mechanisms should also be found in the meantime.
