The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters in the world, producing an estimated 10% of global carbon emissions. It also contributes to 20% of global clean water pollution and 35% of microplastics released into the environment (through the washing of synthetic fabrics). The industry is also infamous for the exploitation of garment workers who are usually women from the Global South working in inhumane conditions (breathing in toxic substances and dust, unsafe factory buildings, …) for very little pay.
Did you know that by taking steps to stop shopping from the fast fashion industry, you have a bigger impact on your personal carbon footprint than if you stopped flying in airplanes?
