The European Greens have continued to solidify their European family, as delegates to the European Green Council meeting in Istanbul voted overwhelmingly to welcome Danish Greens Socialistisk Folkeparti (SF) as full members, and the new Croatian Green party ORaH as applicant members.

The European Green Party and Κίνημα Οικολόγων Περιβαλλοντιστών, the Cyprus Green Party, have called for Turkey to fully respect the Cyprus exclusive economic zone. Both the EGP and Cyprus Green Party, support and call for ratification of the European Parliament resolution on Turkish actions creating tension in the exclusive economic zone of Cyprus.

Any accident in relation to drilling threatens to destroy the local environment, the area’s vital tourism industry, and crucially, the islands’ water supply which relies fully seawater desalination. These dangers are reflected in the strong local hostility to the project, where a broad majority of people are opposed, along with the Canary Parliament (including the regional government party), and six out of seven island councils.
